Memorial Tribute to Chhaya Ji

In Loving Memory of Mrs. Chhaya Khatav

It is sad, untimely passing away of Chhaya ji on 20th May 2020. She was founding member of Spirit of India and relentlessly working for last 18 years to spread message of Yoga to community for their health and well-being.

Apart from yoga for every program and events Spirit of India undertook, she used to participate wholeheartedly, whether it is 108 Surya Namaskar or Swami’s weeklong Lecture series or seminars. She touched life of thousands of Yoga students for motivating and encouraging in friendly manner. She is the soul of Spirit of India and will always continue to live on with the good work she had started.

Many of yoga students and her acquaintances expressed their feeling by Text, WhatsApp and email. We would like to present them to the wider audience here to cherish her memories and to tribute to her service to Spirit of India.

  • Tribute to Chhayaji by Shivashni S Deo, Forever in our hearts
  • It is with deepest sorrow I write this eulogy on the untimely passing of Chhaya ji, a patient, caring, motherly figure who remains in my heart as the epitome of selflessness, humility and love.
  • I met Chhaya ji in my first yoga session with spirit of India in 2007. Her passion, dedication and commitment towards betterment of the mental, spiritual and physical health and wellbeing of each of her students through yoga very quickly became obvious. Be it a child, teenager, or a senior, Chhaya ji always took time to ensure each student received the support they needed to excel. She quickly recognised each person’s capabilities, helping build on their strength through trying a little more each time, ultimately reaching the goals they each set.
  • It was Chhaya ji’s passion and commitment which inspired me to join Spirit of India as a volunteer. Chhaya ji possessed an unwavering faith and ability to see goodness in everyone she crossed path with, taking the time to listen and share in the joy and sorrow of her yoga family. She was the pillar of strength to me and many others. Never at the forefront, Chhaya ji became the key to many of our successes.
  • The untimely passing of Chhaya ji has left a void in the lives of many, a void which cannot be filled. As I spoke with her in the months before her untimely passing, the positivity in her tone, the passion for life, the bravery and unconditional love for her family and dear students radiated through her serene voice.
  • Chhaya ji’s name is strongly entrenched with yoga. Her legacy shall live on from the good work of the loving yogic community she helped create. Chhaya ji undoubtedly remains a perfect example of what should define us as humans – selflessness, humility and togetherness. Her life is a celebration of love and friendship.
  • Gone but never forgotten – Chhaya ji shall forever live in our hearts. — Shivashni. 04/06/2022
  • As per her name, Chhayaji was a unique lady full of compassion for others. As I have known her for past 15 years and I have seen her helping people.
  • To us women, she taught us how to standby your Husband in thin and thick.Sureshji and Chhayaji were the couple that complimented each other.
  • Chhayaji was always smiling which enhanced her beauty from  INSIDE OUT! She  was kind, Hardworking, always smiling, ever Happy person  I have ever  met…. I will keep her in my HEART & MIND for ever. 💐🙏🏽 JAY SHREE RAMDamyanti Prem Ghedia — 02/06/2022, By Minu Kalra 02/06/2022 , Namaste🙏
  • I have been with Spirit of India and Chayaji for more than a decade. I was closely associated with her quite while I attended  yoga classes in the Wentworthville library.  She played an important role both  during yoga classes or the associated social catch-ups as a guide, friend and as a coach. its heart broken that  she is no more with us. She will always be there in my thoughts and prayers🙏.  But I’m sure she’s also looking down with pride at the wonderful  work Sureshji  & the students have  been doing as they carry forward her yoga legacy.  She will always remain alive in my heart. Good bye chayaji. Rest in peace 🙏– By Mukul & Neela Desai — 24/05/2022
  • Dear all , On behalf of my wife and I, it is an absolute privilege to say a few words about Our Chhayaji. What I am going to say abo.ut Chhayaji, will not surprise anyone sitting here as all of us who were fortunate enough to have had interaction with her during our Yoga classes, remember Chhayaji fondly.
  • Chhayaji was an older sister to my wife and me, I am sure many of your feel the same. She was a motherly figure to many youngsters. Chhayaji took these positions very seriously.
  • We all know her most beautiful radiant smile. She brightened the room with her presence. I have never seen her in a gloomy mood and that smile never left her face, not even in death.
  • My wife and I first came to know her during a yoga session. She kept an eye on every student in the classroom and firmly and gently corrected us whenever we did something incorrectly.
  • I vividly remember a teenage boy who attended yoga classes with his mother.  He was suffering a lot from severe asthma.  We saw Chhayaji taking a personal interest in this child and at the beginning of each class, she would make him do neti – we know how difficult it is for a child to do neti.  By the end of about 5 sessions, I heard the mother saying that her son had reduced the use of puffers by at least half!.
  • While Surreshji could be strict with his instructions and high expectations of us, Chhayaji knew each and every one of us’ s limitations and accordingly helped us to improve in the yoga classes.  Chhayaji would walk slowly to the front and gently instruct individuals – do what you can and don’t have to stress out. Chhayaji would give extra attention – one on one – to the students who couldn’t keep up with others, and take them out of the room so others won’t be disturbed.  But again, Chhayaji would give subtle and firm instructions for ensuring we are doing the yoga the right way.
  • One example of her commitment. She would travel 3 hours by public transport to an aged care facility to teach yoga to the older people for years.  The dedication was amazing and breathtaking.  She Never ever boasted about the services she provided.
  • Thousands of us are doing better in our health due to the Spirit of India’s selfless services at a throwaway price when you compare how much each yoga session costs outside.  We can give all credit to a team of two – Chhayaji and Suresh ji. There are no words to thank them for their outstanding selfless service to the community over the years.   Many wouldn’t know how much work goes behind the scene for the yoga classes – such as taking fees, booking halls, insurance, providing mats, photocopying notes and providing notes with pictures, neti pots and huge other admin work to comply with tax requirements.  We can go for an hour and feel great but let’s not underestimate the work required to manage these ongoing classes.
  • For various Hindu religious festivities, Chhayaji would cook some sweets for all Yoga students such as laddus with love.  We know her love for Yoga and Yoga students was immense.  We all loved her back.
  • Chhayaji gave her best until the covid hit – absolutely down to earth, intelligent and amazing singer and a great cook.  It ‘s sad for the Khatav family but it is affecting all of us as well.  I know we all have had a special relationship with Chhayaji.   Only consolation is that Chhayaji didn’t suffer too much and was almost living normally until her death.
  • When we say Chhayaji, I know we call her “OUR Chhayaji” – that says all about her. All family members were present at the time of her death. Selfless service for years with a smile.  We will miss you, dear Chhayaji.Om Shanti, Neela & MukulBy Mangai Jaganathan — 02/06/2022
  • My heartfelt condolences for the sudden demise of our beloved Chhaya Ji. I have known Chhaya Ji for 4 years. Such a beautiful soul. Every time I saw Chhaya Ji, I felt like I was standing next to my mum.
  • Her love and care when preparing sandwiches for us when we did 108 Surya Namaskars was priceless. She looked after us no less than her daughter. She will be dearly missed by every one of us and going to live in our hearts for ever.
  • May God bless her soul and may she rest in peace. May her beautiful and loving memories give us the strength to go through this sad time.
  • Thank you Suresh Ji for giving me this opportunity to say few words about my feelings., Naresh Aggarwal — 31/05/2022
  • For all of us as the Yoga students of Spirit of India, the news of our revered Gurumai, has been very shocking and disappointing and it has made me very sad and low to realise that Chhaya Ji has passed away.
  • I have known Chhaya Ji for over 8 years and all along, I have found her in positive frame of mind offering relentless and unconditional services to promote Yoga, helping new students in improving yoga Asanas, preparing breakfast for the students after our special yoga classes and sessions and above all supporting our Guru Ji over the years in promoting Yoga in Australia.
  • She has been an inspiration for me throughout my journey with Spirit of India as a teacher, a mentor and a great human being with her pleasing personality and down to earth attitude.
  • Chhaya Ji, you were and will always remain the greatest living example of humbleness, compassion and serenity.
  • I pay my tribute to this great soul with whom I got a chance to interact with and will always try to follow the footprints laid down by her. May God give lots of courage and strength to her family members, particularly to our Guru Ji in this situation. Our prayers to Almighty to bless the departed soul to rest in Ultimate Peace.
  • Chhaya Ji, you will be missed always., By Devika Srinivasan — 31/05/2022
  • I have known Chayya ji since 2010 When I saw Chayya ji taking spirit of india practice sessions and some parts of beginners yoga classes I found a disciplined teacher who communicated instructions with precision and clarity. She helped me to learn yoga but also motivated me to teach. I still use phrases that she used for yoga instructions as they are effective and efficient.
  • Her voice modulation communicated kindness and clarity with firmness to ensure people followed her instructions.
  • I cherish this gift from her and strive to emulate it in every yoga session I guide.
  • I don’t miss her as I feel her presence every time I practice yoga or guide others to practice yoga.
  • She is an inspiration to all of us in serving selflessly for the betterment of our community., By Rupa Bansal — 31/05/2022
  • My teacher, mentor and kindness queen: Chhaya Auntiji.
  • I have known Chhaya auntyji for more than 6 years. Yes she was my yoga teacher but I always called her auntyji. From day one she was very kind to me and others in the class. I was amazed how she always remembered if I missed the class and checked on me when I came back to the class. Initially I thought she was strict teacher and didn’t want me to miss the class but as I got to know her more I realised it was her care for me and other students. I feel blessed to have known auntyji and will miss her. It was her faith in me which gave me the courage to take the classes for kids and practice sessions. She would correct me and support me whenever I needed. After each class she would ask how I was going and often asked me to sit for a while before I left the class. She would hug like a mother before I left the class. At the events she would feed us like her own kids and never wanted to get any acknowledgment. I will always be grateful to her for the difference she made in my life. She will always be in my heart., By Amita Gupta — 03/06/2022

  • Chhaya ji was deeply loving and like a mother to all. Whether it was making khichdi for all after the yoga session , or making sandwiches after 108 Surya Namaskar or any other function for Spirit of India – her spirits were unmatched. She was so gentle and caring , always smiling. She was  such a motivator to follow yoga, gently advising and correcting poses. Her presence was always divine everywhere. I have not met a more simple , humble person like Chhaya ji. I knew her  her since last 8 years in association with Spirit of India , she was always inspiring. Whether it was for Angjan ji’s lecture or the yoga graduation ceremony she would work tirelessly. She will live in our hearts forever. Spirit of India Yoga sessions and functions will not be same without her. She will be deeply missed.
  • May she attain moksha. Our prayers are for her, With deep and saddened heart. Amita Gupta, By Suresh & Shailaja Khade — 03/06/2022
  • I was sorry to hear the demise of Mrs Chhaya Khatav whom I used to refer as Vahini .
  • When I got the news, I felt, I should pick up the phone and call Suresh Khatav immediately and deliver a condolence message .But then I felt he might not be in the right headspace to talk.
  • Chhaya Vahini succumbed to her illness gracefully. She approached her battle the same way she did everything else — with grace and determination. I knew her since 1980. After parting from college, I had met Suresh Khatav accidentally at Dadar Railway station. She was accompanying Suresh Khatav.
  • After that I met her on number of occasions. Suresh had a rough start in life but during that tough period, ,she managed everything .
  • She had an excellent job in the Times of India group in Mumbai, which she gave up with a smile for migration to Australia and to be with Suresh Khatav
  • I was fortunate that the duo, Suresh and Chhaya Vahini stayed in my house when the two visited India last.
  • I cannot imagine the mental status of Suresh Khatav. As much as he may try to prepare for the routine life, it must be tough. One can never truly know how it feels to lose the life partner. I can’t begin to imagine the depth of the grief he must be experiencing.
  • Dear Khatav, I am here for you whenever you need anything.
  • For people like Chhaya Vahini, God earmarks a special place in the heaven.
  • May Chhaya Vahini rest in peace in such specially chosen place by God almighty.By Dr Sadhana & Dr Himanshu Desai –24/ 05/2022
  • Yes, Chhayaji has touched so many lives in her lifetime, infusing positive vibes and hopes, that she certainly leaves a void that cannot be filled.
  • This isn’t just my thoughts and words. I am confident that most of us, who have known her, will relate to these feelings for her.
  • I first got to know Chhaya ji many years ago, maybe 14-15 years, when you all were staying in the same Unit block in Epping where my sister was also renting, my sister had introduced me to you and Chhaya ji. I remember that my fist impression of her was a warm caring person and as I got to know her better that was certainly the feeling. She used to make so many Diwali goodies and always remembered to give some to my sister Seema, I also used to enjoy those with my sister. Sometimes she would even bring food for my sister, she used to wonder if my sister would be looking after herself as she lived on her own. My parents who would visit us used to look forward to having a chat with her and would feel very relieved that she was there in the same building. Many a times I used to bump into Chhaya ji and Priyanka when they would be going for a walk.
  • On one occasion I met you and her at the Auburn temple at a big festival/ pooja event and she was wearing a saree. You liked her wearing sarees and commented to me about how good she was looking, and she blushed which I thought was very sweet; I remember this distinctly.
  • You and Chhaya ji at the time were thinking of starting yoga classes and when you did my sister Seema straightaway became your student because of the encouragement from Chhaya ji. Soon after I came along for classes in Epping too and after class Chhaya ji and I used to chat a little, she would always ask about everyone’s wellbeing. I also remember her as a good manager for the yoga classes and an encouraging person for the students, she would walk through the room helping the students to do better.
  • Even though I wanted to but did not keep in touch with you both I would often think that I would someday and she in her warm way would greet with her lovely smile. Her demise comes as a shock and is very sad, cannot imagine her gone so soon. May her soul rest in peace, she will make heaven a very calm and friendly place.
  • I don’t have any photos of her or with her, but I remember her face so well. May God give you and your family the strength to cope with this irreplaceable loss, From Kedar Ashok Dighe 05/06/2022
  • A TRIBUTE TO GURU MAA –My memory goes down to around August 2014, when I developed some pain in my back and was first introduced to ‘ Spirit of India’ by my friend  Shri Shridhar Bhagwat, who said that he had been benefitted by the Yoga classes conducted by Guruji and Guru Maa.
  • Guruji and Guru Maa would come every Saturday at Epping and start the classes at 7 AM followed by another class at 10 AM at Wentworthville. It was truly a dedicated and consistent effort by them.
  • Secondly during Diwali, both Guru Maa and Guru ji would distribute sweets. The ‘ladoos’ were so delicious, the taste of which still lingers on my tongue. When Guru Maa gave me a ladoo and I tasted it, spontaneously I said that this is a delicacy which is famous among the GSB community to which she agreed.
  • Last but not the least I would like to mention that she would always appreciate the help that she received from others. She would always thank me for helping clear the area after the  classes. What else can one ask for when even a slightest contribution was much appreciated.
  • Guru Maa will always remain in my memories. May she attain Moksha, Om Shanti, From Venketesh Jambur — 31/5/22
  • It was shocking news for us, we knew her for very short time and within that time we found her gem of a lady. We enjoyed talking to her during weekly yoga session, miss her now.
  • Hari Om, Shoba and Venkatesh
  • I have known Chaya ji approximately for nearly 10 years. when I joined yoga class for the first time in Quakers hill.  She assisted me in the stretches, I never knew my body could stretch so much.  My fond memories about her, to start with a friendly, beautiful, lovely and humble person. Good and friendly teacher ready to assist and offer guidance.
  • I have enjoyed breakfast on most of the 108 suryanamaskars a real “goddess Annapurani”.

  • I have known Chhaya ji for about 5 years, It is hard to describe Chhaya ji’s personality and passion to help each one, who may have come in contact with her. She was a kind hearted and loving soul- I have come across. She touched the lives of thousands of Yoga students by motivating and encouraging them in a friendly manner. She will be dearly missed. May her soul rest in peace. May God grant courage to the family to accept this loss, From: Sadhana Raja — 01/06/2022
  • Dear Sureshji, Life has a way of having many twists and turns. Just when you get comfortable, and settle in, up comes another challenge. These challenges are what makes us grow and appreciate what we have and our family and friends around us.
  • I am forever grateful to Chhayaji without whose support I would be lost. The yoga exercises that I do everyday even for a short duration unlike the long duration as in class has helped me tremendously.
  • I know Chhayaji for over 7 years, Chhayaji was a charming personality, always willing to help and took great pains in teaching yoga and also provided guidance regularly in relation to all health problems and resolve issues.
  • My memory of Chhayaji coming to our house during Navratri with Sureshji is still so very fresh in my mind. May her soul merge with the divine, From: Sanjiv, Priti & Rachana Shastri — 02/06/22
  • We knew Chhaya Tai for almost 20 years, when you all first came to Sydney and settled in Meadowbank. We cherish the lunches and dinners and picnics that we had together She was the most loving and giving person that we have met, always ready to help and always had a cheerful smile even in the face of adversity. Chhaya Tai you have been a wonderful Tai (elder sister) to Sanjiv and me and an aunt to Rachana.

  • Dear Chaya Tai in heaven, You have really taken our breath away. We will miss you every Rechak and Purak. I knew you since 2013. Almost Ten years. You treated me as a Elder sister. So stared calling you Tai. Your dedication, loyalty, motivation, kindness and personal emotional touch of loving behaviour will be missed by everyone. You were a blessed Soul God gifted us. You have given justice to your life by making others understand how to live and how to do a selfless service to community around you. It was you who use to call and ask how we are doing and it was you who use to be strict sometimes for our benefit. There was a loving mother in you and we all felt so blessed to know you. How humble and beautiful person you were. You and Suresh ji dedicated your lives for people’s wellbeing.
  • The message of Yoga  you spread and the seeds you sow in community are growing day by day.  We will miss you every breath we take.

  • My personal experience with Chhaya ji
  • During one of the Yoga sessions at Quakers Hill High School, Chhaya Ji was as usual present.
  • What was not known to us was that this was a special Yoga session and one would feel really very hungry after that.
  • There was Shankh Prakshalan to be performed.
  • This is where one and only one Chhaya Ji came up with Super large vessel full of Khichdi for all of us. Not only that she had a big bottle full of ghee that would go well with that.
  • It is only Chhaya Ji who could do this.

  • I known Chhaya ji for 7 years ‘since I joined Spirit of India yoga classes.
  • She was most caring and patient person providing great advice to overcome my limitation when learning yoga. I’ll never forget her loving approach to myself and everyone around me, gently guiding me through some asana but also some more energetic pull or push when required.
  • Most memorable moments of Chhaya ji for me are 108 surya namaskar events & her fantastic sandwiches she prepared with care and passion for.
  • She always made sure that we eat enough .I’ll miss her dearly. From Neha Broota: 25/05/22
